Where can I purchase insurance for my pets?

How do I buy pet health insurance? Is buying insurance for animals and pets worth it?
Tip for best answer: M$1.00
Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The easiest place to buy pet health insurance is on the Internet. You can get quotes for pet insurance just like you can for home and/or auto insurance.
VPI is one of the most popular brands of pet insurance in the United States. Their website is http://www.petinsurance.com/. They are providers of both dog and cat insurance and have different levels of coverage.

The ASPCA also offers pet insurance that can be found here: http://www.aspcapetinsurance.com/ A nice thing about this insurance is that part of your premium goes directly to the ASPCA to help homeless animals.

Pets Best Insurance is another provider that you can apply for by visiting their website: http://www.petsbest.com/home_md.aspx They, too, offer both dog and cat insurance and advertise a straight 80% reimbursement.

Whether or not pet insurance is ‘worth it’ is something you have to decide. In my opinion, no, it’s not. Just like human insurance, if you don’t use it, you lose it. I think that people are better off opening a pet savings account and putting away $30 or $40 a month. Over the course of a year, you would save almost $500 which is more than ample for your puppy’s first year, barring any accidents.
For instance, Pets Best starts at $22/month. They only cover $25 worth of flea/tick and heartworm prevention a year. That amounts to roughly two months of treatment. For the rest of the year, you’re paying your $22 premium and $15 for flea, tick and heartworm treatment. On average, a heartworm test costs $40. Pets Best reimburses you $25. So you’re out $15 plus your $22 premium. You just really have to add things up and see if it makes sense to you!

Make sure, when researching the insurances, you read the fine print. Many congenital defects are not covered, sort of like pre-existing conditions in people. A lot of times, it is these very things that cost you money as your pet ages.

Take a look at this site to see what people say about the different providers: http://www.petinsurancereview.com/reviewStart.asp
