How do you make a cat and a dog live together peacefully?

My cousin has two dogs; one loving and good mannered, the other hard headed and bad tempered. The second one is always chasing the neighbors cat. And now my cousin is planning to adopt one of the kittens her friends cat just had. She loves animals and would love to have more cats in her house, but since she is not even sure if the one she is adopting would be accepted by the ‘’angry dog’’, she doesn’t know what to do. Is there a trick people use to make their dog and cat live together in peace?

I have many animals at my place, and have had over the years....its much easier to introduce a new pet when they are young but you can do it with older animals - you have to be tough though, it must be done as the 'master/mistress' of the gang.

The angry dog needs to know who's master. You must be firm. You must discipline the dog with water sprays and rolled up paper as well as with voice commands. Start being firm before the new kitten arrives. You can praise the angry dog for being good, but honestly you have to make them feel very low on the totem pole.

Now, new kitten arrives and is held and petted and doted on in front of angry dog. Angry dog cannot come near this kitten just yet, it must know that ALL the rest of the family hold this kitten in high regard, it is higher on the status pole than the dog....keep them seperated physically but so they can see each other.

Every single time you think angry dog is asking for a fight, be firm and punish the dog before it starts to do something....you can tell when they get ruffled....make sure you pounce first! This kitten is like gold compared to dog and after a few weeks ( not days ) it will adjust to the new animal and be 'nice' because its meant to, not because it wants to.....

after a while they will learn to like one another :)

my smallest and most timid pet is considered the highest ranking after me. I did this on purpose to make she sure wasn't eaten or scratched or hassled...this tiny little thing swats cats twice her size and gets away with it heheheh its funny to watch but the "totem method" works.....
