Do you think allowing people to have endangered animals as pets will help prevent their extinction?
Picture below is “cendrawasih” or bird of paradise from Papua. They’re so beautiful it’ll be such a shame if they are extinct.

The human society of America feels strongly this is not advisable.
E.g. - Wild animals have diseases
- Capturing wild animals threatens their survival - we pay people to gather them - they become dependent
- Baby animals grow up and they do not have cute behaviors anymore.
Domestication takes centuries (historically).
So its not clear. Knowledgeable people do not think its a good idea.

M$I do think, however, is that their main concern is that there are such a limited number of these animals in captivity. I assume that they are trying to get these animals to mate to increase their numbers. So as long as science has funding, it would not necessarily make sense for people to keep them in their homes.
It's a tough call.

M$I saw on Dogs 101, the Shar Pei was a dog in China that was once a worker dog. Once they didn't need the dog anymore, they were just letting them die out. I believe they were also euthanising them. Someone from America was there (I believe they were a magazine photographer) and saw one of the dogs and thought it was just too amazing. He took pictures of the dog and everyone in America fell in love and wanted one. They started bringing them over here and breeding them again. The breed was saved!
I think that people have the power to do that with almost any animal. It's just harder to find those willing to help exotic animals.
