There is a sad side to some Disney movies that portray a specific breed or animal. The first one off the top of my head is the demand for Clown Fish after the movie Finding Nemo.

These fish are actually facing extinction due to the demand from the movie. I personally don't understand why someone would get a saltwater fish for a child. It was hard enough for me to take care the the freshwater fish I had a few years ago. Saltwater fish are much harder to care for and clean.

Another great tragedy would be all the different dog breeds used in Disney Movies that became popular for a short period of time, only to be dumped later at local shelters or the pound. There were Dalmations from the movie 101 Dalmations, Chihuahuas from the movie Beverly Hills Chihuahua... there was even a spike in sales of Cocker Spaniels when the animated movie Lady and Tramp first played in 1955.

Picking a pet based on a Disney movie is not a realistic choice. A pet is something you choose because that animal fits your energy and lifestyle. A pet is a serious responsibility and should not be taken lightly.

My advice if you've just seen a movie and love the animal that is showcased... do your homework and look at the reality of owning that pet. Remember... you can always get a stuffed animal of it or a figurine to show your admiration of the movie.

Well, Pluto and Goofy are dogs though I’ve never seen a dog that really resembles either.

Mickey and Minnie are mice but chances are you won’t find black mice with cream colored faces.

Donald and Daisie are ducks and white ducks with yellow bills are very easy to find.

Alvin, Simon and Theodore are chipmunks and in the United States most people don’t keep chipmunks as pets. If you live in the UK, you can buy a chipmunk at the pet store though I hear that they are aggressive and a bit snappy.

Most of the early Disney characters were inspired by or designed after real animals. Because they are cartoon images, finding a living animal that resembles one of them will be difficult.
The closest I’ve found to the real thing is the characters in Ratatouille. Remy the rat is actually a very lifelike rendering!
